A dental crown and bridge are both dental restorations used to restore damaged or missing teeth. A dental crown is a cap that is placed over a damaged or weakened tooth to protect it and restore its shape, size, and strength. A dental bridge, on the other hand, is used to replace one or more missing teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) that are anchored to neighboring teeth with dental crowns. To place a dental crown, the dentist will first prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping it to fit the crown. Then, they will take an impression of the tooth to send to a dental laboratory, where the crown will be custom-made to fit your tooth precisely. In the meantime, the dentist will place a temporary crown over your tooth to protect it. When the permanent crown is ready, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and cement the permanent crown onto the tooth. To place a dental bridge, the dentist will first prepare the neighboring teeth that will support the bridge by removing some of the enamel and shaping them to fit the dental crowns. In the meantime, the dentist will place a temporary bridge over your teeth to protect them. When the permanent bridge is ready, the dentist will remove the temporary bridge and cement the permanent bridge onto the supporting teeth.
